Is F1 REALLY ok with active-aero in '26? by Peter Windsor
The next-era 2026 F1 cars will not only feature a new (50 per cent electric) power unit but also greatly revamped chassis performance. A "push to pass" power button will make it relatively easy to overtake but a wing adjustment feature, used on the current cars for overtaking, will in 2026 be orientated instead towards increasing top speeds. This is because the new cars, without wing adjustment, could potentially be slower in a straight line than their current counterparts - an optic that F1's "stakeholders" have found difficult to swallow. Their solution is "active aero" - a system that allows the effect of both the front and rear wings to be reduced simultaneously when the car is travelling in a straight line - or perhaps through a flat-out kink. This would apply throughout the race, regardless of traffic - just as DRS is currently used on Fridays and Saturdays. In this video, Peter asks - in the light of the recent, huge, accident suffered by Jack Doohan in Japan - caused by a DRS error - whether F1 is ready to go this step further - and whether a "flat-out kink" for one car/driver/tyre compound combination may in reality be a throttle-lift for another, completely different, car/driver/race package. Peter Windsor in this video offers his views and points out that, with push-to-pas, we don't need DRS or active aero.
