Originally launched in 1968, the XJ was not always positioned as Jaguar's top-of-the-line sedan; on the contrary, it was initially intended to be Jaguar's sole sedan offering, replacing the array of four-doors the company had offered throughout the 1960s, from the Mark 2 to the S-type and the 420.
