I built a split-top Roubo Workbench from solid red Oak boards. Part 1: The Base.
I've had these boards for about 15 years. Before that, they were hand rails in military housing built back in the early 60's. I liberated all that I could find and pulled out all of the nails. After giving the entire stack a quick trip trough the planer, they were stacked and then...forgotten.
I had no idea how they would be used, but hey, they're oak!
My old workbench served me well but could not keep up with the size of my preojects any longer; it was a Harbor Freight special that I had maintained for 20 years. During my TV stand build the bench wobbled so much I thought I'd have to complete the project on the ground. I knew I put it off too long. I needed a solid workbench. A Hoss! A 'eavy sum-bit*h! A forever bench!
I did a deep dive and watched dozens of videos regarding multiple styles. Would I need a Moravian? What about the Dutch bench? The English? A split-top or solid? After a fair amount of Drain Bamage I settled on the split-top Roubo...and watched a dozen more videos. I thought, most of these bench builds are made from laminating 8/4 or 12/4 boards. I had not seen one made from anything smaller and I wondered if it was because of my lack of knowledge. There was my inspiration! There was a plan!
It was not a very detailed plan, I assure you. It was just enough to help me work out the math, the rest was all in my head (a recurring theme with me and yes, I am medicated). So, armed with the experiece editing a few videos provides I set out on an adventure with all the confidence I had the first time I set foot on a dance floor!
This video only covers the building of the base. Although I had made mistakes and had set-backs I did overcome them, had fun and learned a lot!
For me this is not only a project straight outta the practicality handbook but an excersize in personal growth.
Enjoy!
