One thing I've learned is that the bigger the hive, the longer it takes for the queen to come back mated. So...we use these mini mating nucs. Less hive that the queen needs to walk and map out before she goes out and gestated at a drone congregation area. Nucleus colonies are a great tool for queen breeding.
