The arguments about how to play Bach are raging, but we can certainly universally agree that his expressive genius is unmatched. One of the best ways to achieve that, along with articulation, timing, and dynamics, is through ornaments and ornamentation. In this tutorial, keyboardists Lisa Yui and Mahan Esfahani share their ideas for how to deal with ornamentation in Bach, using Bach's Italian Concerto as an example. There is a full beginner guide to how to play ornaments in Bach, based on his guide for his son. Then, Yui demonstrates her own epic ornamentation in the end of the Italian Concerto. Esfahani then discusses the subtle differences between editions of Bach's Italian Concerto and what it can teach us about making Bach's music our own.
These lessons in full can be found on tonebase Premium.
Featuring also contributions from tonebase lessons by Evan Shinners and Leann Osterkamp, as well as performances by Rosalyn Tureck and Mahan Esfahani, on both modern piano and harpsichord.
