In this video, we find the component forces and their directions from the given resultant vector that would result from these two forces. This problem is resolving 1 resultant force to make two component vectors via the Rectangular Method. Problem statement: A barge is pulled by two tugboats. If the resultant of the forces exerted by the tugboats is a 5000 lb force directed along the axis of the barge, determine the tension in each of the ropes knowing that alpha is 45 degrees. Problem walkthrough steps: - Draw a free body diagram - Look at each applied component force separately in variable form - Find or determine the x and y directional component forces for each starting component force in variable form - Sum all the x directional component forces together. Then sum all the y directional component forces together. Also include the resultant force in the correct summation equations -Use the given resultant value to find the unknown component forces via 2 equations 2 unknown solutions Topics of this problem include: Free Body Diagram (FBD) Solve a statics components and resultants problem via the Rectangular Method.
