How to Slow Down Your Fast Horse: Turning Go into Whoa
So often we ride horses that are too much for us. They are so wound tight that they can’t walk slowly, with relaxation and most of all connection. Unfortunately, this is the result of bad training, trainers and selfish riders. Fast horses are being pushed too fast, too hard ending up frazzled, nervous, unconfident and overly reactive in the end. This of course makes the rider nervous and/or frustrated. In either case we are told to try many different techniques to control them, slow them down and in the end, they are nothing but quick fixes that never last or really don’t work, techniques such as: - Use a harsher bit - Hank on their mouth every time they pick up speed - Bend them around to a stop - Run and ride them in tight circles until they slow down - Run them in a round pen to tire them out - Run them under saddle until they tire out - Put them behind a slow horse or a horse that kicks - Give up and just ride Honestly, it's just ridiculous what I've heard and seen. And it's shameful and embarrassing to the human race, seeing the way humans treat horses like this. What if I were to tell you that I’ve just about hear it all and tried it and I’ve learned the ‘secrets” to slowing down a horse that has too much go. Secrets such as: developing the relationship, mindset and most of all the connection. Now, granted, what I’m about to teach you, and show you, takes time, commitment and patience. And in the end, it so worth it. As the saying goes in natural horsemanship, “take the time it takes now so it takes less time later.” Basically, put in the time now, do the right things, and before you know it, you’ve got the dream horse and dream ride.
