This process is not as precise as something like a Polemaster, but it is much freer and requires no external hardware or software. Using this procedure I have successfully taken 150 second unguided subs using the exact setup in the video. So yes, it works! Link to that video here:

Here I demonstrate how to use the SynScan hand controller to do a 3 star alignment and a polar alignment. In the video I use a Sky-Watcher HEQ5 Pro. It works for all Sky-Watcher, Orion, Saxon and many other rebadged Synta mounts. The process for Celestron telescopes is extremely similar.
