How to make English writing flow
#Englishwriting #learnenglish
In this video, we look at what it means to have writing that ‘flows’, or writing that has good readability, and how to achieve this.
We discuss the following points, and then look at a sample essay with and without ‘flow’.
What is flow in writing? The reader’s ability to move smoothly through a text from beginning to end.
✨A reader should NOT:
- have to stop to reread or go back to recheck something
- struggle to find connections between ideas or have to fill in the blanks
- have questions about your arguments/ideas
- be exhausted by the effort
- be bored
🏆How to achieve flow:
- Clear syntax and effective sentence structures
- Focused paragraphs (alignment of ideas, topic sentences, closings)—coherence
- Clear & logical connections between ideas, sentences, and paragraphs—cohesion
- Signifiers (transitions and linking terms, conjunctions, pronouns)
- Maintain progression, avoid digression
- Avoid wordiness, repetition, redundancy, the irrelevant and the obvious
- Variety (words, structures, sentence lengths, approaches, tone, pace, etc.)
- Plan before
- Edit and rewrite after
