How To Build A Raised Garden Bed - Cheap And Easy | Gardening For Beginners
Raised garden beds can be expensive if you're opting for the kits you can purchase online or in garden centres. They're significantly cheaper to build yourself from scratch, and take just a little bit of time and basic DIY skills. By purchasing the materials and building a raised garden bed yourself, this will cost much less.
In this video I'll show you how to build a simple 1 x 2 metre (3 x 6ft) raised garden bed, which I consider a good, standard size which will allow you to grow plenty of fruits and vegetables in!
I'll also show you how to fill them cheaply, and how to make them last longer.
⬇️ Firstly, a list of tools you'll need 🪚 ⬇️
• Electric Drill
• 4.5 x 65mm Decking Screws (x40)
• A Saw 🪚
• Tape Measure & Pencil For Marking Wood For Cutting
ℹ️ For lining the beds:
• Damp Proof Membrane
• A Knife for cutting / trimming
• A Staple Gun OR hammer and U staples
For Filling the beds (hugelkultur)
• Any organic materials: sticks, woodchip, fallen leaves, grass clippings, card board, animal manures, kitchen scraps. ANY organic materials.
• Top Soil.
• Finish off with some store bought compost.
⬇️ Here is a breakdown of materials, costs, and links to the materials I used to build the beds ⬇️
• x1 45 x 70 x 2400mm Timber: £6.15

Total cost to build this 1x2 metre (3x6ft) raised garden bed based on the materials I used:
£43.38 💰
⚠️ Please bare in mind that prices will vary by location and store/brand. Also, things such as the decking screws and damp proof membrane are usually only available in quantities exceeding the amounts needed to build one bed.
So costs for this have to be factored in. But you can still see it is much cheaper to build one of these raised garden beds yourself, costing only around 1/3 of the price compared to buying a raised bed kit online or at a garden center. It is even more worth it if you plan on building several of these raised beds.
