War broke out between Iran and Iraq in 1980. Saddam Hussein and Ayatollah Khomeini went head to head in a conflict that proved to be one of the deadliest of the 20th century, with chemical weapons being used as well as WWI-style trench warfare. Starting with an invasion of Iran, the war soon moved into Iraqi soil; before devolving into a deadly stalemate that cost the lives of hundreds of thousands of soldiers on both sides. The two combatants fought a war for the very existence of their regimes.
