It went from being a prosperous tourist hotspot to a war-torn country that was destroyed by sectarian tensions amongst its many peoples. The capital Beirut was referred to as the ‘Paris of the Middle East’ in the 1960s but by the 1980s, it was torn in half by bloody fighting between Muslim and Christian factions who sought to further their own agendas. It can be argued that the Civil War of the 1970s and 80s came about largely because Lebanon’s rich heritage of religious diversity was poorly managed by a government system that failed to create a sustainable political infrastructure for the Lebanese people.
