How Does a Clock Know What Time it is?
This video explores the incredible way quartz clocks work. This type of timepiece is used in nearly all appliances we use to keep time. They rely on a very carefully calibrated quartz crystal tuning fork that vibrates at a steady rate. But how does it really work!? Watch and find out! Fun Fact: It should be noted that while almost all clocks we use on a day to day basis are based on quartz, clocks that are permanently plugged into the power grid (i.e. microwaves, ovens, etc.) generally rely on oscillations from the AC current in the power grid to keep time. In the U.S. the standard grid frequency is 60 Hz, meaning for every 60 oscillations of the electrons in the current supplying the clock, the clock counts 1 second. In most of the rest of the world, the standard grid frequency is 50 Hz, meaning the clock counts 1 second for every 50 osciallations Music Accreditations: Triangle by Audionautix is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license. https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ Artist: http://audionautix.com/ Easy Lemon 30 Second by Kevin MacLeod is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license. https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ Source: http://incompetech.com/music/royalty-free/index.html?isrc=USUAN1200078 Artist: http://incompetech.com/ Created by Ben Mesko
