How a Savile Row Suit is Really Made: The Rest Is History goes to Anderson & Sheppard
"His clothes seemed to melt into each other with the perfection of their cut and the quiet harmony of their colour. Without a single point of emphasis, everything was distinguished"
The suit has long served as the official attire of men in Britain, Europe and the Western World. Although traditionally the uniform of the elites, and an indicator of class, its purpose, design and social significance have radically shifted over time.
But what is the current state of play on Savile Row, the home of English tailoring? To find out, The Rest Is History made a visit to Anderson & Sheppard, founded in 1906, in search of the best England has to offer in the bespoke tailoring department!
Many thanks to the wonderful people at Anderson & Sheppard.
And a special thank you to The Academy of St Martin in the Fields, whose music was featured at the end of the piece, from their show with The Rest Is History at the Royal Albert Hall in October 2023. The full audio recording of that live show, where Tom and Dominic discussed the lives of Mozart and Beethoven, accompanied by a full orchestra and choir, will be available from Dec. 30th.
