How a Kid Toppled Magic's Most Hated Archetype
Affinity. A name that strikes fear, power and honestly some disgust in the hearts on many Magic players. For some this was the deck that caused them to leave Magic either briefly or entirely. Well before the Eldrazi Winter or the chirps of Caw Blade, Mirrodin left a mark on Magic that is still felt to this day, right down to the card frames it was printed in. But one kid from the Netherlands set out to compete at a tournament where Affinity was 35%+ of the field and despite how powerful the deck was and had been all 2003 and 2004 season long he had his heart set on crushing it. Everyone was either playing it or playing to beat it and at the end of the day the youngest Magic player to ever win a Pro Tour managed to triumph above the hordes of robots present. Not only did Julien Nuijten do it in his first large event at only fifteen years old, but he managed to show everyone that Arcbound Ravager, Disciple of the Vault and the completely busted Artifact Lands could be turned to rust. Even at an event as prestigious as the Magic World Championship. -------------------------------------------------------------- If you're a fan of this content, consider supporting the channel more directly!
