This high-altitude route, starting from South Lake (9,750 feet), winds through breathtaking alpine scenery, passing a series of pristine lakes before reaching my campsite above Long Lake. The journey begins with a steady climb along the well-traveled Bishop Pass Trail, quickly gaining elevation and offering incredible views of the surrounding granite peaks. At the junction with the Chocolate-Ruwau Loop, I veered off the main Bishop Pass route and climbed higher into the alpine wilderness. This lesser-traveled section offers incredible solitude and unique vantage points over the valley below. Chocolate Lake, with its striking turquoise waters, was a highlight, framed by dramatic peaks. Shortly after, I reached Ruwau Lake, a smaller but equally beautiful gem tucked into the high country. As the sun began to set, I found a perfect campsite overlooking Long Lake, with a panoramic view of the towering Sierra backcountry. Spending the night alone in this remote wilderness was an unforgettable experience, surrounded by the sounds of nature and a sky full of stars. This route offers a perfect mix of challenge and beauty, making it an ideal backpacking trip for those looking to explore the heart of the Eastern Sierra.
