When asked how he designs his worlds, Myazaki said as a child he would borrow books from his local library. Genres like fantasy, science fiction, history and anthropology. He would frequently get English texts, which he didn't fully understand, and would fill in the blanks with his own imagination and the books illustrations. He stated this was a major influence on his design philosophy.

After reading the works of some of his favorite authors, as well as some key points on history and mythology, the cryptic storytelling seems a bit more obvious. People often reference Berserk and other Manga. And while I see their influence, I think it's minimal compared to these.
