This is a video essay about the 2018 A24 horror film known as Hereditary, written and directed by Ari Aster. And it's a very messed up and hopeless horror film at that.
Hereditary stars Toni Collette as Annie (the one everyone says was Oscar snubbed) and Alex Wolff as Peter (the one that the hell king known as Paimon pines after). In this analysis/review/commentary/ending explained/deeper meaning/any other key word you can think of video, we discuss the bleakness that goes into making a bleak-as-can-be Hereditary pie and offer up the unique conclusion that perhaps dark and dower horror movies like Hereditary can be good for the human soul when presented and internalized in just the right way.
Additionally, this video also acts as the conclusion to our three part video essay series diving into all three of the feature films Ari Aster has written and directed so far, Hereditary, Midsommar and Beau is Afraid (Aster's short films however did not make the cut... maybe another time). So yes, this is a double stuffed video that mainly focuses on Hereditary but also provides a concluding word on Dani and her Midsommar fun and Beau and his Beau is Afraid fear-ladened extravaganza. Big time spoilers for all three movies, friends.
As always we also provide a saucy little plot summary of Hereditary in case you forgot how this disturbing little horror fueled family fun story unfolds.
