Afternoon walking tour in the city of Guimarães, north of Portugal, starting at 15:00PM on the 28th of July, 2023. The city's origins can be traced back to the early 9th century when it was known as Vimaranes. Its name likely comes from a combination of the Celtic words "Vimara" (name of a ruler or chieftain) and "anes" (descendants), suggesting a connection to a local ruler or noble family. In the 12th century, Guimarães gained prominence under the rule of D. Afonso Henriques, the first King of Portugal. It was during his reign in the 12th century that Portugal's independence was secured, and Guimarães played a crucial role in this feat. It is widely believed that Afonso Henriques was born in the city, and it served as his headquarters during the Reconquista, the Christian efforts to recapture the Iberian Peninsula from Muslim rule. In 1128, the famous Battle of São Mamede took place near Guimarães, where D. Afonso Henriques and his forces defeated his mother's forces, solidifying his claim to the County of Portugal and ultimately leading to the foundation of the Kingdom of Portugal. As a result of this victory, Guimarães became known as the "Cradle City" or "Birthplace of Portugal." Over the centuries, Guimarães continued to flourish, becoming an important political and cultural center. It was the chosen residence of several Portuguese kings and hosted several significant events in the nation's history. One of the city's most iconic landmarks is the Guimarães Castle, originally built in the 10th century and later expanded by various rulers. The castle stands as a testament to the city's strategic importance during medieval times. Today, Guimarães is not only cherished for its historical significance but also recognized for its well-preserved medieval architecture and cultural heritage. In 2001, the city was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, further solidifying its importance on a global scale. In addition to its historical charm, Guimarães has evolved into a lively and modern city, boasting a vibrant arts and cultural scene, making it a popular destination for tourists and locals alike. Overall, Guimarães remains a city deeply rooted in Portugal's history, where its proud past intertwines with the vibrant present.
