"My First Real Adventure Ride" This is my first year riding an adventure bike (Husky 701LR). So far I've only gone solo tripping, which was fun and felt like an adventure at the time, but this was so much more! After this trip I know what it means to go on an “Adventure Ride.” When Gary invited me to join him on a Grand Canyon group ride, I didn't hesitate at taking him up on the offer. The moment everyone showed up at the predetermined starting point, I began to wonder if I would be able to keep up with these guys. They seemed to know what they were doing, which I realized later was an understatement. I'm pretty much a noob when it comes to motorcycles. I bought my first bike last year (XT 250), which I used to "get the hang of" off-road riding in our foothills. I did a lot of slow riding over soft ground and snow, weaving around sagebrush to gain "correction muscle memory," which helped me on this trip. We started out on our group ride on well-maintained gravel roads. Unfortunately, I was having trouble with my camera, so I wasn't able to get much footage. This wasn't noteworthy, just a lot of dust putting in miles till we came to the school house. Gary says: “We can go on the gravel road, or we can go up over the mountain… which is more interesting, because there’s some loose rock on that route.” I was thinking, "hmm, loose rock... Not sure what that means exactly but, okay, let's do this." "Loose rock" turned out to be lava rock the size of a softball or baseball that had broken up and worn into round “marbles of death” covering a steep mountain road. Fortunately, my low gears allowed me to engine break it all and I didn't drop my bike. Others weren't so lucky, arriving several hours later with broken bikes after 30 or so drops of very heavy bikes. My whole trip was spent trying to keep up with much more experienced riders. It turned out to be a crash course in adventure riding. I had a blast- the guys were really encouraging and patiently helped me when I finally got tired enough that they had to ride my bike up the last two obstacles. Thanks guys! Wow! What an Adventure! I had a great time and can hardly wait for my next group ride with these fantastic people! Interested in my camp cooking gear? much of it is of my own design please take a moment to check out my website by tapping the link in my bio or visit directly with this link: https://www.fireboxstove.com/ I've been having fun exploring a "New Way" to use the Firebox Stove. By cooking off to the side of the main flame you can maintain a larger more "Camp-Fire" like flame without burning your food. It's funner and more true to the classic camping ambience. I love the experience this technique offers. Thanks, Steve
