Goodbye Diesel: We drive this electric semi truck in New Zealand
This Windrose E1400 semi-truck runs on batteries, costs about the same as an upmarket diesel rig, yet has more power, costs less to run and needs less servicing. So it's understandable that this Chinese newcomer has generated a bit of a storm in trucking circles.
What's most impressive is that this machine has been tested in the real world hauling 49 tonnes total weight a distance of 670 kilometres (416 miles) on a single charge; a range exceeding what professional truck drivers can manage before needing to stop for mandatory breaks. During which, this truck can recharge at up to 870 kW, adding around 400 km of range in 35 minutes.
It's not a light machine however, with this Windrose E1400 tractor unit tipping the scales at 11,985 kg (26,422 lb). It makes up for it in power with a peak output of 1040 kW (1395 hp) and a battery capacity of 729 kWh. Recently in China, this rig towed a fully laden load a distance of 2,200 km with only two rapid-charge stops required.
Previously, such figures would have been unheard of but recent advances in battery chemistry now make long-haul electric semi-trucks like this a viable and welcome addition to kiwi roads.
Not only are vehicle emissions immediately eliminated (if you're running on Ecotricity electricity!) but drastically reduced operating & servicing costs make electric trucks an incredibly competitive offering – and it's often accountants who make the decisions at trucking companies. This means one thing's certain: big electric semi trucks are here to stay.
