Born in Czarist Russian (Saint Petersburg, 1891), Chekhov rose to fame with the Moscow Theatre. He eventually moved into filmmaking and teaching, and trained some of the biggest names of his generation such as Gary Cooper, Marilyn Monroe, James Dean, Anthony Quinn, and Jack Palance. Chekhov's training methods (based in Rudolf Steiner's Spiritual Science) violated Soviet standards and put his life in jeopardy. Unwilling to give up teaching and eager to develop his revolutionary performance techniques, Chekhov became a citizen of the world. He lived in Berlin, Paris, Latvia, and Lithuania. But, it wasn't until he hit England that Russian émigré George Shdanoff joined his company as dramaturg and co-director. The pairing would prove formidable, and attain international acclaim through an impressive list of American protégés.
