David begins by creating a pen and ink drawing, enhanced with an ink wash, of the iconic baroque cathedral, Santa Maria della Salute, while delving into Guardi’s mastery of perspective. He then continues down the Grand Canal across from the Cannaregio, Guardi’s home district, where he paints an oil demonstration of the same canal scene and the San Geremia church—subjects also captured by famed artists Canaletto and Marieschi.
