Dr. Greg Semenza is a professor of genetic medicine, pediatrics, radiation oncology, molecular radiation sciences, biological chemistry, medicine, and oncology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He is best known for his groundbreaking discovery of HIF-1 (hypoxia-inducible factor 1), a protein that regulates how cells respond to oxygen availability. His research has major implications for understanding diseases like cancer and cardiovascular conditions. In 2019, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine alongside William G. Kaelin Jr. and Sir Peter J. Ratcliffe.
