In this video we will learn how to find the work required to pump liquids out of containers! You have to really pay attention to the units of each quantity you're dealing with, but if you follow my 3-step process it will become manageable in no time.
Examples solved:
1. A vertical right circular cylindrical tank measures 20 ft high and 12 ft in diameter. It is full of oil weighing 60 lb/ft^3. How much work does it take to pump the oil to the level of the top of the tank? Give your answer to the nearest ft-lb.
2. The base of a rectangular tank measures 7 ft by 14 ft. The tank is 17 ft tall, and its top is 10 ft below ground level. The tank is full of water weighing 62.4 lb/ft^3. How much work does it take to empty the tank by pumping water to ground level? Give your answer to the nearest ft-lb.
3. A tank is full of water. Find the work required to pump the water out of the spout.
4. A conical tank is resting on its apex. The height of the tank is 8 ft, and the radius of its top is 7 ft. The tank is full of gasoline weighing 45 lb/ft^3. How much work will it take to pump the gasoline to the top? Give your answer to the nearest ft-lb.
