Want to know about which codes work best with different systems?
Remember to choose a proxy video codec that works best for your machine & workflow. ProRes is a safe bet for most computers, but if you have an Intel Quick Sync CPU which is optimised for H.264, then selecting a H..264 proxy is a good choice. My editor and I have a Intel Core Ultra 9 CPU which supports Quick Sync for accelerating H..264 & H.265. So check if you have Quick Sync, if not, you might want to choose a ProRes codec. If you have an AMD Threadripper, I'd choose either ProRes or DNx Codecs for your proxies. If you're not sure, I recommend running an experiment on some proxy codecs on your machine, try a ProRes vs H.264 to see which ones perform best on your CPU. An obvious benefit of H.264 is size, it's a lot smaller!
