Exploring Whistler's Venetian Etchings with David Dunlop - from Landscapes Through Time
James Abbott McNeill Whistler's Venetian Etchings - Prog 204 from Emmy Award winning PBS series Landscapes Through Time with David Dunlop - Season Two. Join David as he takes us on a journey to the iconic Venetian locations that inspired the provocative artist James Abbott McNeill Whistler during his transformative trip in 1879-1880. After a disastrous libel trial with art critic John Ruskin, Whistler found refuge and inspiration in Venice and explored different effects in etching, dry point, and pastels. Venice proved to be a turning point in Whistler's career as it influenced his style and technique. The city's unique architecture, canals, and light became a major source of inspiration for him, and he produced some of his most iconic works during his time in Venice. David demonstrates a dry point on copper plate alongside the Rio de San Barnaba canal, located near Whistler's first studio at the Ca' Rezzonico, showcasing Whistler's brilliance in graphic design.
