Exploring the Destroyed Cities of Syria | Frontline | Daily Mail
Of all the cities in Syria conquered by ISIS, few experienced more death and destruction than Kobane and Raqqa, located in the autonomous region of Rojava.
These locations became synonymous with the global battle against the extremists as they spread their caliphate through the Middle East like a lethal plague.
When the jihadists were eventually defeated in Syria in 2019, the inhabitants of these war-torn communities set about the perilous task of rebuilding. But their efforts were blighted by attacks and threats from the likes of Turkey, Turkish-backed militias in Syria, Syrian government forces and ISIS sleeper cells.
Now the nation is at new crossroads after former President Bashar al-Assad was ousted in December 2024 by Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), triggering yet more instability.
With the very real prospect of another civil war on the horizon, MailOnline’s Chief Foreign Reporter David Averre went to see what life in Raqqa and Kobane is like in 2025, before conflict breaks out yet again.
