Execution of famous Polish actor & Nazi collaborator who betrayed his own people to Germans-Igo Sym
Karol Juliusz “Igo” Sym was born on 3 July 1896 in the city of Innsbruck, then part of Austria-Hungary. The Second World War started on 1 September 1939, when Nazi Germany invaded Poland. After Warsaw officially surrendered to the Germans on the 28th of September, Igo Sym remained in the city. During the defense of the capital, he had served in the Civic Guard, assisting with the digging of air-raid trenches and helping to rescue the wounded from collapsed buildings. After the occupation began, Sym initially worked in the city magistrate’s office, where he served as a translator and clerk in the military vehicle registration office.Although suspicions of Sym’s ties to German intelligence existed even before the war, no concrete evidence emerged until later. In April 1940, the Polish resistance group Union of Armed Struggle, also known as ZWZ, had not yet confirmed any collaboration. However, on 12 July 1940, following the fourth investigation into his activities—this time ordered by the Polish military intelligence section known as “Dwójka”—his cooperation with the Germans was definitively established. The investigation was led by Roman Niewiarowicz, director of the Komedia Theatre and later an officer in the underground unit WW-72, operating under the codename “Łada.” His surveillance of Sym had begun as early as 1939, during the evacuation of Polish authorities to Budapest.
