EE Research—Low-Cost Phased Array Antennas for LEO Satellite Internet Links—Dr. Charzenko and Cheryl
Talk featuring Dr. Walt Charczenko, affiliate assistant professor and lecturer, and Cheryl Kung, an antenna engineer pursuing a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering, in the School of Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics at the University of Washington Bothell. Low-Cost Phased Array Antennas for LEO Satellite Internet Links Currently, there are many efforts by various countries and companies, including SpaceX, Amazon, OneWeb, and Telesat, to launch and maintain a large constellation of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites for truly global Internet access. Phased array antennas will play a vital role in ground stations to track and establish a communications link with these satellites. Portable inexpensive ground terminal antennas must be developed to lower the cost and ease of entry into this Internet of Satellites. In her Independent Study topic, Cheryl Kung will explore the design, test, and mass production of these millimeter Wave phased array antennas using new low-cost planar circuit board and additive printing techniques.
