Ireland is home to over 80 lighthouses, but Clare Island Lighthouse in County Mayo is one of the most dramatic, perched high on the cliffs of Clare Island, 120 meters above the sea below. The lighthouse dates back to 1806, but has been completely restored and now includes several finished guest houses, a sauna, a conservatory, spacious reception rooms, a chef's kitchen, 2.25 acres of grounds, and even a helipad.
Clare Island is home to a thriving community that we got to experience on our stay on the island. It was also the historical home of Grace O'Malley (1530-1603), or Granuaile, an Irish hero known as the Pirate Queen who commanded 200 men and a fleet of galleys and once won a sea battle directly after giving birth to a child (also at sea!). Granuaile's castle is on Clare Island, and she is buried at the Abbey on the island. To this day, the O'Malley family maintains a strong presence on the island.
