Does TMS Cause Insomnia? Answered by Robert D. McMullen, MD NYC Psychiatrist
Robert D. McMullen, MD NYC Psychiatrist Video About, Does Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Cause Insomnia? Dr. Robert McMullen is a psychiatrist in New York City and has been practicing psychopharmacology for the past thirty years and TMS therapy for depression for the past ten years. He went to medical school at Georgetown University and did his residency at Columbia Presbyterian in New York City. What is TMS and does it cause one to have insomnia when undergoing TMS treatments? Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a noninvasive form of brain stimulation treatment using a coil on the head that stimulates or inhibits neurons in different sections of the head. TMS is used mostly for depression but can be used for other things as well. If you have not found relief from your ongoing depression with traditional therapies, such as antidepressant medications or psychotherapy it is time to consider TMS as an option. Multiple sessions are needed to see improvement in your depression and mood, and the majority of patients have experienced significant relief within several weeks after starting the treatment. TMS is approved by the FDA for more than ten years and it is very safe. I discuss in this video if, in fact, TMS causes insomnia. In general, it is not believed that TMS causes one to have insomnia. However, if you are receiving TMS treatments and you do develop insomnia than it may, in fact, be related to each other. I explain in the video clip why TMS treatments stimulate insomnia as do certain antidepressant. How would one need to combat insomnia when they are going through a TMS treatment? I recommend sleeping pills which may help ease the problem with insomnia. Taking medication such as Benzodiazepine, Xanax or Ambien may help you get around the issue. However, the main thing to focus on is to get out of the depression and overcome that. Your goal should be on finding relief from your depression. If your TMS treatments, however, cause you to have insomnia it will only be temporally. It is important to remember that TMS is harmless. The only 'harm' that could happen is a seizure while you are seating in the chair while being treated. I also discuss what my thoughts are regarding serotonin medications in this video and give an example of what happened to one of my patients when she was on it. In this video, I speak about the effects of TMS and give actual examples from patients that I have treated with TMS. I talk about their healing process, medications, nutritional effects, and other issues concerning TMS.
