Alex La Rotta is yet another selector coming out of the Lone State's bullpen of collectors. He's a professor at Huston Community College where he teaches U.S. and Mexican American History. An avid record collector, DJ, and writer, his work focuses on the intersections of race and popular music. His book in progress, "Young, Gifted, and Brown —a culmination of oral histories and primary research on San Antonio's West Side Sound—" investigates music affinities and cultural kinships across Black and Chicano communities in South Tejas. Said Alex of this episode: "Thought I'd name this mix '¡Alegría!' — that's my mom's name, which translates to 'happiness.' Shout out to the mamitas of the world. It's also the title of one of the songs on this set: the perennial Latin funk favorite by Elia y Elizabeth, a tropical pop-funk duo from '70s Colombia. '¡Alegría!' is an eclectic blend of new + old Latin American sonidos: emphasis on the soulful, funky, fuzzy, tropical, and joyous.
