Dhul Qarnayn (also known as Zulkarnain or Zul Qarnayn) is one of the most mysterious figures mentioned in the Qur'an. His incredible journey, power, and wisdom continue to intrigue scholars and believers alike. Who was Dhul Qarnayn? What role did he play in protecting humanity from Yajuj wa Majuj (Gog and Magog)? How is his story connected to Islamic prophecies? This video explores the fascinating history of Dhulkarnain, his encounters with different nations, and his legendary construction of the barrier that holds back Yajuj wa Majuj.
The Story of Yajuj wa Majuj (Gog and Magog) in the Qur'an
The Qur'an describes Yajuj wa Majuj as a destructive force that will be unleashed before the Day of Judgment. These chaotic tribes are mentioned in Surah Al-Kahf, where Dhul Qarnayn builds a mighty wall to contain them. Yajuj wa Majuj (also spelled Yecuc ve Mecuc) are prophesied to break through their barrier and spread across the earth, bringing devastation. Their emergence is one of the major signs of the Last Day. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) warned his followers about their eventual return, highlighting the magnitude of their impact on the world.
Dhul Qarnayn in the Qur'an
Allah granted Dhul Qarnayn immense power, knowledge, and authority over the earth. He traveled to the ends of the known world, reaching the setting and rising places of the sun. In his travels, he encountered different civilizations, some in need of guidance, others in need of justice. When he came across a people threatened by Yajuj wa Majuj, they pleaded for his help. With divine wisdom, Dhulkarnain constructed a massive barrier of iron and molten copper, sealing the tribes behind it until the time of Allah's decree.
The Identity of Dhul Qarnayn
Many historical theories attempt to identify Dhul Qarnayn. Some scholars suggest he was a righteous king like Cyrus the Great, while others believe he could be Alexander the Great, though the latter is a debated viewpoint. What remains clear is that Dhulkarnain was a divinely guided ruler, chosen by Allah to protect humanity and uphold justice.
Prophecies About the Release of Yajuj wa Majuj
Islamic eschatology teaches that Yajuj wa Majuj will one day break free from their barrier and cause immense chaos. According to hadith, every day they attempt to break through, but by Allah’s will, the barrier is restored. However, when the appointed time arrives, they will finally succeed, spreading corruption across the earth. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) described their numbers as overwhelming, saying that they would consume all resources, even drying up Lake Tiberias. Their emergence will lead to great trials before Allah finally destroys them through divine intervention.
