On the morning of May 7, 1942, a Japanese scout aircraft reported a sighting of U.S. carriers in the Coral Sea, prompting an immediate response from the Japanese carrier forces. By
08:00, 78 Japanese aircraft were launched, directed toward the location of the reported sighting, while confusion over conflicting reports led the Japanese carriers to adjust their course.
