By 08:00, 78 Japanese aircraft were launched, directed toward the location of the reported sighting, while confusion over conflicting reports led the Japanese carriers to adjust their course. Meanwhile, the U.S. launched a strike force, aiming at what they believed was the main Japanese carrier group. However, instead they unwittingly flew to a smaller force, with the Japanese light carrier Shōhō...
