David Clarke's Amazing 1930s GWR Model Railway, 38ft,16ft 6in
David Clarke was a man of passions; motor racing, filmmaking, Ferrari sports cars, and above all, the Great Western Railway and in particular its signaling arrangements. In the 1970s he began to realize his dream of building an 00 scale model railway as, what was then, a unique technical exercise in replicating what he experienced as a boy when visiting an uncle who was a GWR signalman. David died in 2002 but his wonderful 4mm scale tribute to the 1930s GWR still exists in the custodianship of the Shuttlewood-Clarke Foundation and is cared for by a team of dedicated enthusiasts. Although an ongoing work of improvement, the Ulverscroft Model Railway is instantly recognizable as David's fantastic achievement and remains true to his original vision of drivers following their trains, reacting to the signals controlled from a 210-lever signal box. Watch now, learn how the layout is operated, and journey back in time to a slice of God's Wonderful Railway. By watching you will be supporting one of David's other passions, the heritage Great Central Railway, in its reunification project which will see trains running from Leicester North to Ruddington in Nottinghamshire.
