Curved Edge - Mr Linn’s Feeler Gauge Trick
How do we create a Curved Edge on our plane blades? Introducing Mr Linn’s Feeler Gauge Trick David Charlesworth taught a method using a strip of card on the waterstone. It was simple and easy, and hundreds of us who bought his videos and attended his courses used it. But even he wasn’t happy with the durability of the card, which tended to break up, especially as it got wet due to the waterstone. I know he tried various other materials such as plastic from a file cover. In 2018, when I was on his Mortice and Tenon course he showed me a diamond “Crowning Plate” by Toshio Odate and DMT founder David Powell. It worked well, but unfortunately it’s no longer available. This idea, to use car spark plug feeler gauges, came to me by accident when I was looking for a honing guide for a mortise chisel! Serendipity and all that. I hope someone will give this a go and let me know how they get on! Video Production Notes: Thanks to one of my subscribers for pointers on the sound quality - I think the sound on this one is somewhat improved. More research has also improved the visuals and lighting a little bit, but for me the biggest improvement is in how I work. It’s all behind the scenes stuff, but although this video took 41 hours to make, so still roughly 2 hours per minute, each of those hours was much more productive. Also, I’ve broken the one month between posts barrier!
