CONNECTING 3 DISPLAYS TO THE APPLE MAC MINI M4
Good Morning!
Good Afternoon!
Good Evening!!!
Welcome and Thank You for watching THE PLPNO CHANNEL!
On today’s episode, I am connecting three display monitors to my M4 MAC Mini.
A little background…
I have three monitors (all have HDMI inputs) that I am using with my work laptop which is a Dell Windows PC which is connected via Docking Station which is also a Dell brand.
What I wanted to do is use the three monitors with the M4 MAC MINI by simply unplugging the Type C cable from my work laptop (which is connected from the Dell docking station) and connect it to one of the Thunderbolt Ports on the MAC Mini.
Prior to purchasing the MAC Mini, I read on Apple’s website that the MAC Mini is capable of connecting three monitors. To be sure, I even went to a local Apple Store and spoke with a salesperson and explained what I wanted to do and current set-up which the salesperson confirmed.
After purchasing the M4 MAC Mini, I realized the Dell docking station is not allowing the MAC Mini to send signals to each of the monitors. In order to set-up my MAC with my Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, I had to connect one of the monitors via HDMI to the MAC Mini. After connecting the keyboard and mouse, I attempted to connect the docking station via Thunderbolt port with no luck…I tried each thunderbolt ports as well as the two USB C ports on the front of the Mini and still no luck.
I was thinking maybe I needed a MAC compatible docking station OR try using a Hub instead of a docking station…
Then it hit me!…
MAYBE the MAC needed the Driver of the Dell docking station installed??? I went and downloaded it and sure enough it worked!!!…Well…Sort of.
There’s a slight trade off. Somehow the MAC would not allow to simply use the thunderbolt ports…One of the monitors have to be connected to the Mini via HDMI and then the other two monitors, which are connected to the docking station, can be connected to the thunderbolt port! At this point, I am stoked it worked and I am able to use my monitors with the MAC Mini.
In summary, here’s my workaround and/or steps I had to do:
Unplug the USB C cable of the docking station from my work laptop.
Unplug the HDMI cable from the back of the (middle) monitor.
Plug a separate HDMI to HDMI cable to the (middle) monitor and the MAC Mini.
Plug the docking station’s USB C cable (where the other two monitors are connected to) to one of the thunderbolt ports.
Power On the Mini.
Open the downloaded driver’s application so it recognizes the USB C cable that is connected to the thunderbolt port.
When done using the MAC, reverse the steps above to prepare my work laptop for use.
So for now, I just have to do the steps above!
Stay tuned for an update to see if I decide to use a Hub!
