Hey Fig Fam, It's the time of year where we are all eager for Spring and this is an ideal time to prune your fig trees. The temperatures are still cold, but for many of us the coldest days of the year are behind us and we can start looking ahead. While it's winter, our trees are still dormant and we can prune them for the year ahead! During that process we can look for branches that grow directly out from the rootball with their own root systems below the soil line. These branches known in the gardening world as Suckers. Suckers are a fantastic option for propagation, due to the fact that they already have their own roots associated with them. Doing this in winter will minimize the impact on you fig tree and help in the pruning process so in spring it explodes with growth and in summer sets bountiful amounts of fruit.
