Lorsqu’on pense aux États qui ont laissé leur marque dans l’histoire des grandes puissances européennes, on pense rarement à la Suède. Pourtant celle-ci a, pendant un siècle, été l'un des acteurs majeurs de la politique européenne. En s'appuyant sur une armée moderne, professionnelle et efficace, celle-ci est parvenue à s'imposer comme puissance dominante dans la Baltique et, malgré sa faible démographie, devenir un royaume avec lequel les Grands ont dû discuter.
