Colombia's Snake Infested Prison | Colombia's Wild Coast 101
Gorgona, a remote Colombian island surrounded by shark-infested seas and impenetrable jungle, was once home to a high-security prison, dubbed Colombia’s Alcatraz, from 1959 to 1992. Known for its brutal conditions and human rights abuses, it housed the nation’s most notorious criminals, with murders common within its walls. Today, the abandoned prison is part of a national park, and the jungle is reclaiming its ruins. While the island’s natural dangers—poisonous snakes, caimans, and shark-infested waters—made escape nearly impossible, it also teems with incredible wildlife, including capuchin monkeys, venomous snakes, and giant boas, offering a glimpse into the unique life that thrived on this notorious “snake prison island.
