Audiences were no strangers to aliens and flying saucers in movies, but that kind of subject matter was usually in the domain of cheap B-movies from a bygone era. At the tail end of such a cynical decade of cinema, it must have been utterly dazzling to be met with that familiar iconography with more naturalism, spectacle and optimism than ever before.
