Christmas carols from the Renaissance and Baroque periods | King's College London Chapel Choir
Crystal clear sounds at this festive concert of English Christmas carols. Most of the carols have their origins in the Renaissance and Baroque periods. However, some are simply popular classics that are British Christmas essentials. The works will be performed by the King's College London Chapel Choir (KCL Chapel Choir) under the direction of David Trendell. The concert took place in 2008 at the Festival de Musique Baroque de Lyon in the Chapelle de la Trinité. 00:00 Opening Titles 00:46 Repons des Matines by Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (1525-1594), English adaptation from the 19th century 03:11 Come, Thou Redeemer of the Earth by Michael Praetorius (1571-1621) 06:23 The Truth Sent from Above, English Traditional, Harmony by Ralph Vaughn-Williams (1872-1958) 09:07 A Spotless Rose by Herbert Howells (1892-1983) 12:22 Angelus ad Virginem, Chant of the Annunciation, Traditional from the 14th century 14:51 Verbum caro factum est by Hans Leo Hassler (1564-1612) 17:55 Laetentur Coeli by William Byrd (1543-1623) 21:21 Hosanna to the Son of David by Orlando Gibbons (1583-1625) 24:02 Videte Miraculum by Thomas Tallis (1505-1585) 34:30 Nova, Nova - Chistmas Carol from the 15th century 36:45 Verbum caro factum est by John Sheppard (c. 1515-1558) 40:07 Silent Night by Franz Gruber (1787-1863) 43:52 Away in a Manger, Christmas Carol 46:34 Ding Dong Merrily on High, Christmas Carol 48:29 Coventry Carol by Kenneth Leighton (1929-1988), Text from the 15th century 51:35 Bethlehem Down by Peter Warlock (1894-1930) 56:02 Magnificat by Hieronymus Praetorius (1560-1629) KING'S COLLEGE LONDON CHAPEL CHOIR DAVID TRENDELL | Musical Director Sopranos: Elizabeth Thompson, Emma Hopgood, Charlotte Fairbairn, Sarah Trowley, Charlotte Drummond, Helen Lewis, Claire Bradder, Frances Andrews, Madeleine Teague, Marie Macklin Altos: Maria McCarthy, Rose Martin, Judith Hutchinson, laura Nakhla, Daisy Evans, Joel Newsome Tenors: Robert Busiakiewicz, Louis D'Heudieres, Henry Bevan, Nicholas Maw, Lawrence Davies Basses: Patrick Allies, Jonathan Coates, Julian Leanh, Laurence Fischer, Samuel Pantcheff, Joshua Edwards Many Christmas carols have a long history. The oldest are Latin hymns that have been sung at mass and during the Liturgy of the Hours since late antiquity. This changed in the 13th century, when St. Francis of Assisi introduced Christmas carols in Italian to church services for the first time. Until then, only the churchwardens were allowed to sing, but now the congregations could also join in. The use of other languages spread from Italy to France, Spain, Britain and the rest of Europe. Christmas carols in English first appeared in 1426 in a work by John Awdlay. In it, the chaplain from Shropshire listed twenty-five “caroles of Cristemas”. © 2008 Karl More Prductions / FMB / Mezzo Watch more concerts in your personal concert hall: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL_SdnzPd3eBV5A14dyRWy1KSkwcG8LEey And more videos in our playlist Baroque Music: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL_SdnzPd3eBXLyjR_MiLhm0kuiyjEcVG1 And in our playlist Christmas Music: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL_SdnzPd3eBXmY6H2WxPci2FYvlBTGjzT Subscribe to DW Classical Music: https://www.youtube.com/dwclassicalmusic #christmasconcert #baroquemusic #englishchristmassongs
