If you are new to this lesson series, I’d suggest that you at least go back by one or two videos before tackling slightly more complex progressions. You can also read the lesson in the video description to get an explanation of Roman numerals and how to hear the chord progressions.
In this video, all of the chord progressions will be made up of I, IV, V, and vi chords, which are also the most common chords you’ll see in many rock and pop songs. We’re introducing the vi chord here, which is by far the most common minor chord. It’s also the only minor chord you’ll hear in these progressions, so it should stick out and be the easiest to identify.
I would suggest that for these exercises, you should first find the vi chord and then figure out the other chords using context clues. If you’ve memorized which scale degrees are which chords, singing different parts of the scale and listening to how those notes sound should also give you some clues about what the chords are. Only the V chord contains scale degree 7 in this exercise, which wants to resolve up to 1. Only the IV chord contains scale degree 4, which wants to resolve down to 3.
It’s also helpful to have several common chord progressions memorized in all major keys, as this makes it more likely that you will spot it in the wild.
