Her work focuses on the intersection between trauma and addictive behavior. In this interview, Jan Winhall discusses the origins of her model, which combines Stephen Porges' Polyvagal Theory with Eugene Gendlin's Focusing that pays specific attention to a person’s inner feeling, their Felt Sense. Jan Winhall's journey began 40 years ago when she was working with women who had survived trauma and were struggling with self-harm and addictions. This led her to move away from traditional models, which she felt were too pathologizing. Jan Winhall explains how discovering Polyvagal Theory and meeting Stephen Porges changed her life. She emphasizes how the theory can be applied to bring to light unconscious survival behaviors (such as addictions and self-harm) as adaptive responses to maladaptive situations. Jan also criticizes the stigma surrounding addiction, underlining the need for a compassionate, neurophysiologically-based approach. She sees addiction as a short-term survival strategy that facilitates regulation but is exacerbated by a perceived lack of security, and not as an intrinsically maladaptive behavior. She emphasizes the relationships developed in therapy, such as those fostered by group work and embodied practices, as essential to overcoming the isolating effects of addiction. Her publications aim to disseminate practical, body-centered approaches that enable therapists and patients to carry out their healing work collaboratively. ►►► Chapters 00:00 Introduction to Jan Winhall 00:41 Introduction to the Felt Sense polyvagal model. 02:47 Integrating Polyvagal Theory into therapeutic practice 06:00 Addiction from a polyvagal perspective 16:02 Healing from addiction 🧠 Find all our programs on Polyvagal Theory at: https://quantum-way.com/product_theme/theorie-polyvagale/ 📚 And our books: https://www.editions-quantum-way.com/livres/ #PolyvagalTheory #MentalHealth #JanWinhall #Addiction #Neuroception #BodyAwareness #TraumaHealing #NervousSystem #PTSD #ComplexTrauma #Psychology #Trust #WellBeing #Stress #Neuroscience #SelfRegulation #Trauma #Grounding #Psychoeducation #Homeostasis #Anxiety #Mindfulness #StephenPorges #DebDana #EmotionalRegulation #PolyvagalConference #Attachment #Therapist #Psychotherapist #Clinician #Healing #Therapy #Psychotherapy #Resilience #TraumaRecovery #Quantumway Copyright @ 2024 Quantum Way --- Let's share our passion and work together towards a fairer, safer and more caring world. 🌍 Find us on social media: Facebook https://www.facebook.com/quantumwayfrance/ Instagram https://www.instagram.com/quantumway/
