Catholicism in Kyrgyzstan: How Are They After the Soviet Union Persecutions? | Pilgrim’s Feet
The Soviet Union, also known as the USSR, was a socialist state that existed from 1922 to 1991. It was formed after the Russian Revolution of 1917 and comprised 15 republics, including Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan and of course, Kyrgyzstan.
The Soviet Union had a profound impact on its citizens. The communist regime imposed strict controls on people's lives, suppressing individual freedoms and creativity. The government controlled the economy, media, and education, and anyone who opposed the regime faced severe consequences, including imprisonment or even death — that includes those who practiced their religions, as they imposed atheistic kind of government.
