Can a Pro Surfer Survive a Day with the USCG Rescue Swimmers??!

Earlier this fall we had an incredible opportunity to spend a day with a team of US Coast Guard Rescue swimmers and see what the job is all about. We didn’t know exactly what we were getting into but we jumped at the chance to get a glimpse into their world knowing that they are the ones that keep an eye out for us while we are in the water. We got to explore the base, get a taste of the training they do in rescue swimmer school, and get to fly up in their helicopter and complete some rescue simulations. Turns out their worlds aren’t so much different than ours and the love for being around the water was a common dominator we all shared. As a surfer, being a coast guard rescue swimming has to be one of the coolest jobs in the world. You get to make a living being in and around the water, get all the most high tech wetsuit gear, and have opportunities to travel all around the country. Kind of like being a pro surfer now that we think about it… just with rides in a helicopter everyday.
