Cab Ride Train to the Clouds (Tren a las Nubes, Salta - Argentina) train driver's view 4K
In this video, you can enjoy a cab ride - train driver’s view on the Train to the Clouds (Tren a las Nubes) from San Antonio de los Cobres station near Salta, a city near the border with Chile, to the impressive La Polvorilla viaduct, in 4K/60 frames per second. Salta is the capital and largest city of the eponymous Argentine province, located in the northwest of the country, approximately 1,600 km from the Federal Capital, or about a 2-hour flight. The city has a population of 640,000 inhabitants. Tren a las Nubes or the Train to the Clouds was a part of the former Ferrocarril General Manuel Belgrano network, connecting Salta with the town of Socompa. Along its route, the railway crosses a total of 29 bridges, 21 tunnels, 13 viaducts, 2 corkscrews, and 2 zigzags. The route climbs from Salta at 1,187 m to La Polvorilla at 4,225 m above sea level. Because of the design decision not to use rack-and-pinion traction, the route was designed to avoid steep grades, gaining altitude through zigzags. The origins of the line date back to 1899, when preliminary feasibility studies were carried out. The construction of the line began in 1921, but the line was inaugurated only in 1948. The track gauge is 1,000 mm. The complete route from Salta to La Polvorilla is 217 km long, although the video drives us from San Antonio de los Cobres station to the La Polvorilla viaduct. It is the most important structure of the entire line—a suspended bridge 224 meters long and 70 meters high. This tourist train on the route, branded as Tren a las Nubes, was inaugurated on July 16, 1972. This service continued uninterrupted until 1990 when everything stopped with the beginning of the privatization and concession process of Ferrocarriles Argentinos. Soon, the Tren a las Nubes services were restarted. Since 2014, the Tren a las Nubes experience has been managed by a state-run company. The Tren a las Nubes is among the highest train journeys globally, after the Qinghai-Tibet railway in China and several lines in Peru and Bolivia.
