Established in stages beginning in the 19th century, the line offers a glimpse into Swedish railway history and engineering evolution. Originally, Sweden’s main railways were strategically built away from the coast for military and logistical reasons. However, with growing demand, coastal cities like Gävle, Söderhamn, and Sundsvall were gradually linked, forming what we know today as the East Coast Line. The first section from Stockholm to Uppsala opened in 1866, followed by the privately built Uppsala–Gävle Railway in 1874, and finally Gävle–Sundsvall–Härnösand in 1927. This mainline was fully electrified by 1934, showcasing Sweden’s pioneering steps in railway electrification with its standard 15 kV 16.7 Hz AC system. Now Sweden’s busiest line, with an impressive 60 trains per hour north of Stockholm, the East Coast Line remains a vital route for both passenger and freight transport.
