Build an Authentic Shaker Bench | Introduction to Woodworking Project
Shaker Bench Plans https://jonpeters.com/products/shaker-bench-with-backrest
In this video, I’ll Demonstrate how to build a sturdy Shaker-style bench inspired by an original made between 1825 and 1850, likely in Hancock, Massachusetts. While the original was nearly 8 feet long and made from pine, I’ve adapted the design to be more practical for modern homes—about half the length, slightly wider, and crafted from solid cherry.
Cherry is not only stronger than pine, but over time, it darkens to a warm, rich reddish-brown that gives this bench a timeless appeal. The classic Shaker simplicity, combined with rock-solid construction, makes this piece useful and elegant.
Whether you're a seasoned woodworker or just getting started, this project is a great way to add handcrafted charm to your home.
